The Essential Guide To Editing Breaths Out Of Vocals

Posted in Editing, Member's Area, and Mixing

If you are interested in learning how you can quickly trim breaths out of vocals in Logic Pro, Then Check out this tutorial. Also this tutorial can be useful for more than just vocals. It can also be used to edit out noise where there should be silence in guitar parts, or bleed on drum tracks.
Check out the tutorial and leave any questions in the comments.

Check out the tutorial here

This tutorial is based around splitting regions just before the breath, and then trimming the region to start after where the breath ends but before where the words start. It also relies on using the move forward and backwards by division value to get the playhead to exactly where you need to be to split or trim. Because we’ll be moving in extremely small increments, you may want to set your division value down to a 32nd note or a 64th note. Also moving by transient is another option when moving in small increments.

first of all, thanks so much for your time.
Really this is what i need exactly THANKS SO MUCH for your hard work.
    May i ask some questions:
1- after you set the Region to start from a place, what about the wave that is on the left of the Left locator? let’s say this a breath, is t deleted or what?
2- also, if The Vocalist repeated the part more than 1 time, i mean we did different takes, can i omit these breath before comping, or i should make comping first? am asking this because, while in pro tools, if the Vocal needs to repeat his or her take, i did not make an undo, and start Recording again this will delete the previous 1, and i can edit from there without comping.

3- COncerning Fade out, should i go at the end of the region to do so? or from any place?
4- should i Use Option U after making breath editing or before it?
4- if am recording a Dialogue for instance, How can i know my place in a project with minutes and seconds, if i need to? and can i record using minutes and seconds instead of bars and beats? what about the navigation keys? how they will be in this case?

      1) the breath aren’t deleted, as you can set the region back to it’s original start point or anywhere between where you trimmed it and where it started to bring back the breath or a portion of the breath. Once you have the playhead where the region starts, you can move the playhead to the left of that position and press Command left bracket, to re-extend the region to that point and bring back part or all of the breath depending on how far to the left you went.
I would comp first then breath edit after takes are flatten.
Alternatively while comping you can split on either side of the breath, then once you flatten the take folder use left and right arrow to move through the regions to all the regions that are just breaths and delete or mute them with control m.
      3) so long as you have the region selected the fade out will be applied to that region no matter where the playhead is. It’s important to ensure you have the right region selected. You can use control home/end to hear where the region starts and ends, or control s to solo the region and then when you press space to play you will only hear the selected region.
      4) Select which takes you want to use, then press option u or option shift u, then edit breaths. See the more detailed answer above.
Follow this tutorial to see how to see where you are in minutes and seconds when recording in bars and beats. https://lb.theoreo.monster/quicktip-navigate-your-project-in-bars-and-beats-and-see-where-you-are-in-minutes-and-seconds/
To record in minute and seconds in stead of bars and beats, uncheck the use musical grid found under the record menu. I believe I covered this in the free getting started course so consult that module to see how the navigation works when you switch it from bars and beats to minutes and seconds.

Hey Ramy, try switching a project over to minutes and seconds and try using the navigational keys like period, comma, Control Command period and comma etc to get a feel for how they will work in non musical time. Control period/comma should still move you by transient whether in musical grid or not.

SOme comments but not related to this module:
1- let’s say I click play and make pause on a place let’s say bar3, i need to listen several times from bar3, when i go there i hit space to play it plays from this place, but again it plays from the start, so, should i move my playhead in another way or what?
2- Fade in and out are not working, i select a region and i went to the inspector and choose fade out, but nothing happened, what i did wrong?
3- the Login here is not working if i come from teh logic.band itself, but if i clicked on a module that is for members only , it will ask me for login, here, it is working ok, so, is it just me or this is something should be fixed?
4- Thanks so much for adding something to send emails when we got replys, but should i confirm each time from my email that i need to receive replys? i think it should be by default that any reply i will get emails on any reply, am i rght?

    thanks in advance

Thanks for this Steve. Using command plus left or right bracket seems much quicker than splitting on both sides of the breath. I will try this approach for sure. If on listening back to a section after editing a group of regions you find you may have trimmed a little too much off a particular word, is there a way to undo that particular region without having to undo the other edits to get back to the problem region?

Yes, Command Left And Right Brackets are non destructive, so if you took a little too much off just move the playhead to where you would like and hit Command left or right bracket again to bring back some of the audio.
Case in point if you move to bar 1 beat 3 and press command left bracket and realize you took too much off, you can then just move to bar 1 beat 2 and press command Left bracket again and now the region is trimmed to begin at bar 1 beat 2 instead of bar 1 beat 3.
This is where using some of these smaller division values like 32nd or 64th note can come in handy because you can move in small increments and take out a little more or let back in a little more.

Hi Mr. Oreo. I’m just getting started with this tutorial. I found out that if I forget the division value Logic is set to that I can make a hotspot that reads the pop-up. And although I’d rather set the division with a key stroke, I can also set it with the popup.

Hi. As it turns out, the hotspot thing is unreliab le. The hotspot keeps getting undefined or disappearing.

Hi. Besides showing off my beautiful typing skills, I find that it helps me if I set up a region with noise, then use Command-U to listen to it over and over to make sure it is the right length. If I adjust it, I need to hit Command-U again to tell Logic the new length. Otherwise, it still thinks the cycle length is as long as the last time I set cycle mode. This made sense to me once I played with it.

yes, Command U is essentially putting a left locator at the start of the region and a right locator at the end of a region, so if you change the length of the region you will need to press command u again so it can adjust the Locators.

One thing to keep in mind, the Division pop up button is only visible if you set the display option in the control bar group to custom. If it’s not set to custom the division pop up button isn’t visible and the hotspot may fail.

    Hi Steve!
Thank you very much for this tutorial!
one thing is for me a bit difficult.
When i have the playhead on a position and i press play to test, if this is a good point, and i thinki ok this is right and press pause, the playhead is now on an undefined position and i have to search the right start again. But i don’t know, how long exactly was the playback, so i have no exact value for going back.
    My question is now:
Is there a shortcut for going to the last position where i started the last play?

    Thanks!
    Freddy

I assume you are not using the LogicKeyboardNinja key commands. It’s strongly recommended that you do, especially when following tutorials on this site. One of the few changed from the logic default is how the playhead behaves when you press the space bar, and that is that it returns to the last space you moved it to and started playing from. This makes editing from the keyboard a lot more efficient in my opinion.

Thanks very much for this info.
Cause i have the german keyboard layout and the german version of Logic, there are the ninja shortcuts not handy for me. Some keys are on a strange position on the german keyboard.
So when i learn a ninja shortcut in a tutorial, i create it in my german list equivalent.
Now i will look for this command in the list and reassign the space key.

the command you are looking for is Play Or Stop and go to last locate position.
